What weapons would you choose to have in a prison tower.

A Mauser 98 with the Rhineland 45 ACP conversion.

why? and is that the only thing you would have?

        1. In a 16 inch barrel, it's plenty of power, and it is a heavy projectile with relatively low speed. This means adequate penetration with virtually no danger of ricochet, especially with LSWC projectiles, unlike the .223 Remington or other high velocity rounds.

        2. The turnbolt action will allow me time to think about each shot and its placement, and resist the desire for "spraying and praying". Precise fire sends the message that I mean business. Ranges being generally under 50 yards means iron sights are adequate.

        3. I'm in a tower. It's a defensive situation. Prisoners don't have body armor and there is not a whole lot to build cover from in the yard. In a riot situation, I'm going to use the water cannon anyway. In any other situation, all I have to do is keep things static until the 'specialists' arrive.

        4. I can share magazines with my side arm.

I like the idea of using a 45ACP in a rifle, they are pretty accurate, however I thing the 50 yard range is a bit low, I'd estimate up to a hundred maybe a hundred and fifty. Would that 45 still be as accurate?

Water cannon? do some states still use that?

In that situation I'd just go with an M4 with a holosight. No need to get too complicated.

I'd lean towards the Springfield M1a with a holosight. Twenty round capacity, 308, very accurate. Since you'd be stationary in the guard tower, the weight fo the M1a over the M4 would not matter, and little or no magnification would be needed in the scope since the yard is rarely more than 500 yards from corner to corner.

I had a friend suggest to me that the M203 would be a great choice. However the grenade launcher would be loaded with less than leathal rounds, such as CS, OC, stinger or multiple baton rounds. I thought this would be cool, however I like the idea of putting a halosight on it.

Personally I'd be all for napalm, just give the correctional staff enough warning to get out before frying the place.

"I am stuck on napalm cause napalm sticks on me" Let the A-10 do a couple of gun passes first then drop the napalm.

ohhh!! 308 would make big holes!!! But, only effective with a person that knows how to shoot. The cartridge may be to big and gun to heavy for a bunch of underpaid corrections officers who most likely only go and qualify once a year. Shooting at a target the size of Fat Albert.
        The halosight would help-alot!

So there's a little collateral damage, so what. Dead prisoners bitch less. ;)

Yeah, so do dead hostages. A situation could erupt where any number of innocents could be held against their will (a staff shrink, another gaurd or a visitor).

I will stand behind the 45 this time.

San Quentin used to use Win.94s in 25-35. A lever action like small frame Winchesters or Marlins in 45 acp would work fine I think. Even with a 16 inch bbl you should be able to get 12 rd.s in a full.length magazine. I understand that oftimes warning shots are fired to ricochet against a wall and a fmj 230 gr. .45 acp would work fine for that. ## In WW-2 the Brits made a variant of their SMLE in 45 acp with a 10 in. bbl + 10 in. of supressor which made a silent sniper rifle. If I recall correctly they'd use it out to 200yd.s. ## A lever action can give you a fast repeat shot but still allow you to carefully pick your target. A Marlin-type action would allow you to easily fit on a variety of optical, electronic, or iron sights, unless you go for a scout-type of scope fitting.
