Re: Favorite Rifle for Elk/Mule deer hunting??
Thu, October 26, 2006 - 2:33 PMI think a 7mm magnum would do fine, for Elk, and long shots at muleies. Though I don't hunt any more, I still have my Ruger 77 in 7mm mag. I would think any of the major brands would be fine, its all dependent on what you wish to pay. If I recall, Weatherby used to make some fine guns. By the way, where are you planning to go hunting? -

Thu, October 26, 2006 - 6:21 PMI live in Colorado and the Elk are EVERYWHERE... I live up in the mountains. So, I'm going not too far from the house actually. I've been leaning towards the 7mm.. what about the 300 mag?? -

Re: Favorite Rifle for Elk/Mule deer hunting??
Wed, November 1, 2006 - 10:59 AMI would love to own a 300 winmag. Its as good as if not better than the 7. I don't have my balistic books with me now. We are practically neighbors. I am in New Mexico. -

Re: Favorite Rifle for Elk/Mule deer hunting??
Wed, November 1, 2006 - 5:51 PMWow cool, which part if you don't mind me asking??
Well.. my choices right now are a Winchester .270 (unsure of the reach as of yet) and a nice 30-06 that is a friend of mines he's going to let me use. That is probably the one I'm going to use. I really would like to get a 300mag though one of these days... Any idea about how much $$ they usually go for??

Thu, November 2, 2006 - 10:53 AMI live in Albuquerque.
The 30.06 is a good round.
Here is a link to a elk hunting sight: members.tripod.com/~elkhunter2/300.html
The savage is going for around $500 and you can spend your way up from there.

Re: Favorite Rifle for Elk/Mule deer hunting??
Sun, November 5, 2006 - 9:01 AMI agree with the 30-06 as a good all around cartridge...
I'd stick wtih the main mfg's - Rem, Win, etc...
Whatever you choose, make sure & practice with that particular rifle & load, so that you are 100% comfortable with it and can take it out in the field and know exactly where it will hit. -

Sun, November 5, 2006 - 2:13 PMi agree with you about sticking with main mfg's.
I've been practicing with it, probably not as much as I will be this week - but I have been! Sore shoulder and all to prove it! :-)
Any of you guys going hunting or have gone hunting this year? -

Re: Favorite Rifle for Elk/Mule deer hunting??
Sat, November 11, 2006 - 8:45 AMI've never hunted for wild pig yet... YET being the key word.
I had some friends in texas that always hunted with dogs. I don't think I'd do that - seems unfair to me for the pig..... -

Re: Favorite Rifle for Elk/Mule deer hunting??
Fri, November 24, 2006 - 11:11 PMWild piggies are very fun... have seen them up close & personal on some friends ranches. From a lone big boar looking like a stretched out 55 gallon drum with a huge noggin slapped on, to a family herd of sows with a bunch of little piglets following close behind.
It always seems to me that whenever i have a 22 in hand is when i see the most game (which i wouldn't dare shoot with a 22!)...
How's the elk season treating you? -

Re: Favorite Rifle for Elk/Mule deer hunting??
Fri, December 22, 2006 - 6:51 PMStick with the 06 bud the .270 will reach out ther nice and flat but I don't know about mulies at much more then 250 yards I got 2 cyotes yesterday with a ruger #1 in .270 at close to 300 yards not my gun but I wa impressed with it though I prefer the .243 for targets that size at that range as for the hogs part of my job is keeping them under control in the orange grove we have and I have taken many with a Marlin model 60 in .22 the stingers shoot nice and flat and work well my back up is usuly a Tauras in .22 mag, they are considered ferel animals here and belong to who evers land they are on at the time so on privet land there ins no closed season, good luck with elk.
